Over time, the Ocular Prosthesis does need to be replaced. The acrylic surface of an ocular prosthesis eventually begins to deteriorate. In addition to scratches that occur on the surface of the artificial eye, bacteria can begin to build-up on the acrylic surface and in the microscopic pores. Infections and drainage result from these bacteria.

Over time, our body shape changes. The shape of the socket also changes. Growth in children, body changes in adults, and the nature of the eye loss can also affect the fit of an artificial eye. Typically, artificial eyes last about 5 years before they need to be replaced.

Some symptoms that may occur when one is in need of a replacement artificial eye:

    Chronic discomfort when wearing the prosthesis

    Changes in the fit or appearance of your prosthesis

    Droopiness of the upper or lower lid

    Increased drainage or discomfort

    Recurring infections

    Chronically irritated or itchy lids
